South Africa has loadshedding (planned blackouts to keep the national power grid from collapsing) for 8+ hours a day now, so if it’s a dark evening I’ve started doing messy sketches by lamplight. Sometimes I like them and I colour them. This week I drew some AfM marith, and some Bunwells.

it has been ~1 month since ^this! in order of 'most recently worked on / thought about at least kinda constructively':

E-Rated Thing – am on the "complete rewrite into a clean document" draft now. painted a setting on it in my mind's eye. no longer begins with a numbered list of things I need to not forget. remaining "fuck hold on what even goes between these 2 paragraphs" zones are small & few. has a title now (maybe) (better than Definitely Not having one).

Thing for Fanbook (!) – appears to be capable of staying an appropriate length. I know Exactly what the narrative progression looks like & it's dense & should be able to take you on a great Mind Journey once the sentences are all in there & tuned. maybe like half of them are in there now and another idk quarter of them are Kinda in there. gotta sit down patiently with it for the rest. might have a swag idea for the Title→Intro Construct. kinda can't believe I've been talked into writing my crunchiest idea for this but you know what. I'm strong

AFM-Related Items – the dominoes are set up for me to crack my knuckles and generate workable drafts of these I just have 2 entire oneshots that are ALSO in the "sit down patiently with it" phase & one of those comes with deadlines. & the other one's hot + additionally is a oneshot. which is to say "i wanna do that one". progress pending but not for long!!!

Long Fucking Thing – apparently it was a month ago that I finished my "check this out"-style outline for Chunk 3 of this for my wife?? sure, a month; okay. since then I have engaged in time-honored traditions such as "combing through an outline until more of it is in a pleasing and sensible order," "outlining a particular scene in more detail to generate more of the Actual dialogue & hammer out the pacing," & "realizing that a line you already put in Was a placeholder by suddenly coming up with the real line out of nowhere, which fucks way harder" for Chunk 4, but haven't made it past "about 1/3 of the way through" on any substantial Organizational Efforts there, which is fine for the time being because like holy fuck. god. I'm writing 3 to 5 things at once what is going on in here

Emmeline was born to a socialite and a travelling Ministry official, the result of them both rebelling against their respective betrothals. Once Emmeline arrived and it was made perfectly clear that she was certainly not a Shafiq like expected, her parents were swiftly and quietly married off, and their loveless union subsequently led to the birth of her brother, Tiberius, two years later. For the first five years of her life, Emmeline barely saw or heard from her father in her childhood, and in some ways, she was quite grateful for it -- one parents’ resentment was enough to handle at a time, as well as that of her grandparents, and she’d lie if she was ever asked if she missed her fathers’ fleeting presence.

Quite aware of her existence being, shall we say, an unexpected complication for her grandmother, Emmeline did everything in her power growing up to please her, to be the good pureblood daughter in the way her mother had never quite managed. She spent much of her childhood at the Parkinson estate, not so much separated from her brother who soon joined her, as completely ostracized from her mother, being poked and prodded and kneaded into someone her grandmother could show off, moulded into someone that Emmeline could not recognize when she looked into the mirror, though she’d never had much time at all to be anybody before. 

Her grandmother had never managed to measure her expectations when it came to her eldest granddaughter. She’d always viewed her as the only means to salvage what was left of the family legacy after her eldest daughter brought about a scandal that was still talked about by other socialites from the Sacred 28 families, and punished her severely when Emmeline continued to bring shame to the family by not being sorted into Slytherin, and instead being sorted into Ravenclaw. That had never been part of the plan, and sent Emmeline, still a child herself, who had been forced to spend her entire childhood making her family proud of her to atone for her mother’s sins, into a spiral wherein she befriended mudbloods muggleborns, half-bloods and blood traitors, tried out for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team and nearly killed herself flying through the hoops, and spent much of her free time wandering the halls aimlessly as though terribly lost (which, in complete fairness, she was.)

Two years later, her brother was sorted into Slytherin within less than two seconds of the Hat being placed on his head. All at once, everything both clicked and fell apart for Emmeline, who had always taken the brunt of her grandparents anger and was now suddenly faced with the fact that she had been so caught up in her own failure and subsequent path of blistering rebellion and all the consequences that came with that she had somehow completely missed her brother being groomed into that of a perfect pureblood heir. That day she knew she’d lost him, that she’d failed him, and that soon there would be nothing that she could do to turn it around for him, for the both of them. Much of their lives at Hogwarts were led completely separately, and even when they did see each other, Tiberius was a stranger to her, and her to him.

Sometime in her sixth year, she was sent to live with her father, after years of never having spoken to the man. The Parkinson’s wanted to wash their hands of her, and her mother, who had never taken the Vance name and was all too happy to pretend the ring on her finger meant nothing, was all too relieved when the plan was proposed. Emmeline would be permitted to continue being herself, but she would never again step foot in the Parkinson estate, they would no longer be her safety net until she realized just how foolish she was being, just how disgusting her little troupe of friends was. The Vance cottage became her home, and despite her underlying resentment towards her father, who seemed amused to allow her to continue her anger and pain driven rebellion and seemed to share some of her tendencies, she was happy there. 

Even then, she was never officially disowned, her name and portrait was never scrubbed or blasted off the wall, and her betrothal still stood, despite it not being to another member of the Sacred 28. Wyvern had never been part of the plan, not for Emmeline who had begun working at the Ministry as an Obliviator shortly after graduation, but an incident involving a rather aggravated muggle being obliviated and losing far too much at the hands of her colleague (not even her!) meant she was fired, suddenly without income and left without two knuts to rub together. The Order of the Phoenix was all that she had left, and she knew there was little she could offer them without access to the Ministry now.

Dumbledore, though, in his unending wisdom, had a plan. He needed spies, as many as he could get -- whether actually in the Death Eaters or simply within the known Death Eater leaning families of the Sacred 28 (as the Longbottom’s never counted), and Emmeline, half a Parkinson, was perfect for it. He was all too happy to encourage her to use this as a means to flee back to the Parkinsons, to beg on her knees to be allowed to come home because she had been attacked and violated and and humiliated and lost her job because of it, because she retaliated, because she was defending herself, because she realized just how stupid she had been, that they were right all along, which she eventually did, after some careful planning. Tiberius took less time to convince than Emmeline thought he would. He welcomed her home, had the house elves take her trunk upstairs, and before she knew it, she was playing the picture perfect pureblood. Wyvern was actually her brother’s idea -- despite their differences, he knew she would never be content to sit at home alone, especially considering the state of her bedroom wall already, and that’s how she’s ended up here, studying Cursebreaking of all things -- Defence would have been too on the nose, in her opinion.

Married right out of Hogwarts to Alexander Rosier. His family had connections her father wanted and she wouldn’t do anything to make him upset with her.

Alexander and Esmeralda’s relationship was cold at best. Neither cared for the other and often outsourced their affection. They both kept it a secret from the world and especially their children who grew up thinking their parents were very much in love. Alexander worked for the Ministry and Esmeralda worked in the Auror offices as an investigator. Which worked in Alexanders favour as he often required his wife's help to be helped out of situations and investigations he often found himself in 

Esmeralda followed her husband into the death eaters when Voldemort came knocking. It wasn’t much of a choice really if he went in it wasn’t like she could say no and when her father and siblings were given seats at the table she didn’t see any other choice. She would follow her father wherever he went if necessary. It didn’t matter if she agreed or not, this was how they worked.

DEATH TW Alexander wasn’t the brightest man, that became obvious to her when in 2018 he got involved in a deal that went very sour. He panicked and became an obvious target for the black market thugs he thought he could outsmart. When said thugs attacked their daughter in an attempt to get to him, Esmeralda made a deal. His location for the safety of her children. What they did with him when they found him, Esmeralda didn’t care. His stupidity hurt their child and that was the final straw.

She played the part of a grieving widow well. Comforted her children as they mourned the loss of their father but truly felt nothing. DEATH TW END

Esmerelda signed on as DADA professor as a spy for the Death Eaters. However she has been having second thoughts about it all, about the way she raised her children. Maybe they weren’t simply better because of their status, Alexander had proven he wasn’t? Maybe there were things more worth fighting for than something as silly as blood status?

An Intro: Disparities in U.S. Healthcare

Whether it be an issue of gender, race, or social class, it comes as no surprise that access to healthcare in the United States is far from equal. Over the years, our country has pondered a variety of modes of health care delivery systems, but each one has fallen short in eliminating the great divides that permeate health care access among underprivileged groups. The United States has turned away from the “Universal Healthcare” model used in 32 other countries, and instead we’ve attempted to mold our broken system into something better. In 2010, the Affordable Care Act was passed in hopes of reforming some of our failing, antiquated healthcare systems. 

According Dr. Silvers (2013), and his estimate of the impacts of the ACA, 

“The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) had 3 main objectives: (1) to reform the private insurance market—especially for individuals and small-group purchasers, (2) to expand Medicaid to the working poor with income up to 133% of the federal poverty level, and (3) to change the way that medical decisions are made” (p. 402).

While this act may have been well intentioned, the outcome proved to make little progress in bridging the gaps in health care access among underserved and/or underprivileged populations. Today, our country faces a stark reality that healthcare is not readily accessible for all, especially when gender, race, or social class are considered in the determination of providing care.

Victory - Gods Of Tomorrow

“Totgesagte leben länger”, so sagt man. Und so beweisen Victory mit einem Donnerschlag, dass die Fans, die nach dem letzten Album “Don’t Talk Silence” die Band ad acta gelegt haben, falsch lagen. Victory können alles sein, auch die “Gods Of Tomorrow”. Vielleicht sogar an manchen Stellen noch härter als gewohnt, aber doch kristallklarer Heavy Metal, wie man ihn nicht anders Victory erwarten darf und kann!

My MAcc Experience: A Guest Post by Ben Ma, MAcc

Ello, I am not Annie. She asked me to write a lil bit about my experience in MAcc. I am her not-imaginary boyfriend/supplier of stuffed animals. A lil intro about me, for those of you that don’t know, my name is Ben Ma, I recently completed both the MAcc program at UWaterloo and the CFE. I’m starting work as a Taxation Analyst at CIBC. Some of you may know me as:

I have an unhealthy obsession about puns, mangoes and the Canadian Tax system (I kid you not).

I’m going to preface this post with a few notes:

I haven’t taken all the courses, and obviously my discussion isn’t necessarily representative of an MAcc discussion.

I’m a self-proclaimed tax geek, so almost all the courses I took were tax electives. Some I recommend for all people, tax or otherwise, some I don’t recommend at all.

I’m going to say a lot of bad puns. Deal with it.

I’m going to break this down into two sections – the courses, and the MAcc experience.

♛ MACC EXPERIENCE ♛

I am going to say this upfront: You don’t learn any new content in MAcc. What you learn in MAcc isn’t so much new information, but more so of a new way to approach a situation, and learn how to write cases, and present information in such a way that it would be useful to a user. You’ll have already learned everything you needed before in an undergrad course- now you need to … Master that knowledge.

There’s also no homework that you technically need to do. Same as undergrad, you could probably not do assignments/cases and just coast on by. But you are going to suffer a LOT if you don’t prepare for class. Because MAcc is just so case-based, not doing the cases takes out at least 50% of the learning. For the love of God, if you didn’t prepare for class before, now is the time to do it.

If you thought you did well in undergrad and none of this advice applies to you, get your head out of your ass. I went into MAcc with an 88% average, and I still managed to get a 28% on a final exam. Now’s the time to start preparing for class, reviewing, and for the love of God, start showing your work. In MAcc your final answer doesn’t really matter that much unlike in undergrad. I struggled in the beginning because I would just go straight to the answer. But now what’s important is your process. You could be completely off base with your final answer, but if you showed your work 90% of the way, you can probably get 90% of the answers.

♛ COURSES ♛

Considering how the MAcc program is really just a substitute for a PEP program, and is really just a super prep course for the CFE, I think it would be reasonable to talk about how well the course prepares you for the CFE, and how interesting/useful it is.

MANDATORY COURSES

ACC 611: Financial Reporting

One of your mandatory courses for the first term. Ya know all those X91 courses in AFM? Here’s a situation and now let’s do parts A B C of the question? Yeah, I don’t think you can count on those courses anymore.

ACC 611 is really one of your big exposures to CFE style cases, and it’s a huge change from the way undergrad wanted you to present information. Now the focus isn’t so much on the solution, but on the process that you used to approach the situation. This course also put a much bigger focus on actually knowing the accounting standards. I really struggled in this course (this is the one I bombed the exam on) because I didn’t have a structure, and I essentially guessed my way around the exam.  Thankfully I ended up fixing this before the CFE. A big part of how to improve and prepare in this course is just a LOT of practice. After a while, you start becoming more familiar with the standards, and how to approach the problem. A big thing that helped me fix up my approach was starting to use a case writing structure.

Outline the issue

Discuss the standard if applicable

Apply case facts to the standard

Recommend corrections if necessary.

ACC 680: Managerial Accounting

Remember AFM 211? Welcome back to it. This course is essentially a more difficult version of AFM 211. You’ll become very familiar with how to structure a DCF in this course. Thankfully that’s really the only thing that’ll happen in this course, a few variations on how to do a DCF, it’s really quite … manageable. I usually found this course to be a lot more straightforward than the other courses, what they usually want is the same: one quantitative analysis and a qualitative analysis, and provide a recommendation based on that. A lot of how to prepare for this class is really do a lot of practice cases until DCFs are ingrained in your mind.

CPA ELECTIVE COURSES

The CPA elective courses are supposed to represent the four elective roles that you can take in the CFE: Audit, Tax, Finance and Performance Management. Each course will teach you how to achieve depth in that particular area. I only took Tax and Finance myself.

ACC 607: Tax

This course is essentially AFM 462 intensified. You’ll do a case every single week, and they’re not going to be easy, it’s quite…taxing and you may or may not have to remember obscure tax facts. Here’s the thing about tax though, you’re never expected to have a perfect answer. In addition, any case in ACC 607 will be twice as hard as any case in the CFE. I honestly believe that the ACC 607 course overprepares you for the CFE, to the extent that you’ll be very comfortable doing the tax role if you decide to do it.

For this class, again, you should at least attempt the practice problems. In this case you’re always going to miss something though. I think it’d be more helpful to do these cases in a group setting, and make sure you take very detailed notes in class, this is the one class where notes in class are very important. I find tax to inherently be very reliant on technical aspects, more so than the other electives – note taking is imperative as a result.

ACC 690: Finance

This is one course I don’t recommend. Yes, it does provide you the information you need for the CFE, but I honestly feel like the course is just a rehash from some undergrad courses. Some of the slides are the same as 3rd year AFM 373... typos included. It’s also the only one of the elective courses that doesn’t test you on a case based exam. It’s not hard to prepare for this course either, you can’t really exceed or do poorly in it. All in all, compared to the other CPA Elective courses, it’s not as well designed or structured in my opinion.

If I had to recommend 2 courses that you should take, I would recommend Audit and Tax. Lame standard choices I know. But I think that the things you learn in these courses are harder to pick up on your own, whereas the things you learn in the other courses can be learned through practice or common sense. Needless to say, you should also choose electives that match the role you’re planning on taking for the CFE.

MACC ELECTIVE COURSES

ACC 605: International Tax

If you are not a fan of tax, this is not the course for you. This is a very tax research-heavy course that will discuss the implications of taxes in multiple jurisdictions and how the Canadian Tax system accounts for it. Though this is a great way to understand how tax works, I have to admit, this will not be useful for the CFE. At all. It’s unlikely you’re going to use this in work either, as it’s a very complex topic and requires a lot of expertise and research, unless you’re going into some international tax advisory role. Definitely not a course to take if you want a bird course. But if you have a passion for tax, I highly recommend this course. It’s hard, but satisfying when you understand it.

ACC 662: Tax Policy

I didn’t take this course, but I’ve talked to a lot of classmates about it. You know how I said International Tax was tax research-heavy? This one is even heavier. This is a course that teaches you why and how policymakers develop taxes, and you’ll write some essays on particular topics. Again, not an easy course, and not for those who don’t like tax. But if you’re considering a PhD in the future, or a future in academia, or even tax policy, this is highly recommended, as this will literally walk you through what you need to do when researching tax.

ACC 690: Tax for the CFO

I cannot recommend this course enough, especially if you’re entering a tax role in industry. This course teaches you how companies actually prepare tax provisions and it’ll give you a very good understanding of IAS 12 (Taxes), combining accounting and taxes in a comprehensive way. It’s useful for the CFE, as it’ll teach you IAS 12 very thoroughly, and adjustments to reach taxable income if tax is your weak point. I’m currently in a taxation role at CIBC, and what I did in this course is going to be directly transferable to my role.

ACC 606: Business Valuations

I also highly recommend this course. One of the major parts that you can be tested on in Finance is valuations. This course teaches you how to approach a valuation, and is incredibly useful for the CFE if you are weak in Finance. If you’re a Finance person, this course also moves you directly to the second exam for the CBV designation if you’re interested.

Eden’s Curse Regards

Today is the day! We are delighted to say that our tenth anniversary re-recording of our classic debut album and bonus DVD 'Live In Glasgow - The Official Bootleg' is now officially out Worldwide via AFM Records.

Our band leader and bassist Paul Logue explains: "The first album really was the foundation for all that was to follow and ever since Nikola joined the band we have been inundated with fan requests to re-record the older material and whilst it would be great fun, it would also be the same amount of work as recording a brand new album. In actual fact, that is one of the main reasons we recorded the live album, 'Live With The Curse', so the fans could hear Nikola's voice on the older songs. However, it did not stop the flow of requests - in fact it made it worse! So, with this pivotal tenth anniversary coming up, we thought it would be a good idea to do it and AFM agreed. It's turned out really great and given the older songs that little bit of freshness. It's not to out-do what went before but to pay homage to a very important record in our career".

The debut re-recordings were mixed by our former drummer Pete Newdeck (Tainted Nation, Grim Reaper) & Mastered by Harry Hess (Harem Scarem).

Coupled with the re-recorded debut album is the 'Live In Glasgow - Official Bootleg DVD' which is the 'Live With The Curse' live album recording show in it's entirety. Filmed at The Classic Grand in Glasgow on 28th November 2014, the release mark's the band first official live DVD release, albeit in a bootleg form. "The footage is absolutely excellent" states bassist Logue. "We did not intend to film a DVD, but the audio recording company brought two cameras along to capture the show and when we saw the results we were really surprised! We put out four videos on You Tube to promote the live album and the fans kept asking to see the full show on DVD. So, here it is! We've called it a 'bootleg' because it wasn't recorded on 6 cameras, e.g one above the drummer and one on the keyboard player - like we would do for a proper DVD release. However, beyond that is looks and sounds great! We WILL do a DVD in the future but in the meantime this give our fans across the world something to enjoy time and time again and it makes 'Revisited' a very special package indeed" he adds.

'Revisited' is the ultimate package for Eden's Curse fans old and new and a fantastic introduction to the band's music. It's a true celebration of the record that started it all, from the guys who carry the legacy forward. Over 60 mins of music and 100 mins of film make 'Revisited' a must have for all Eden's Curse & Melodic Metal fans.
